We said goodbye to Reggie and Emmy and then left Toler’s
Cove Marina for a one-hour trip to the Harborage at Ashley Marina on the east
side of Charleston. We started off with a 90 minute historic bus tour
around Charleston. We drove through the
Citadel, the market area, and the Battery area which consisted of pre-civil war
homes along the waterfront. On Saturday,
we made a quick trip to the grocery store and then relaxed around the boat all
day. We finally ran out of luck with the
weather and had a little rain that day.
On Sunday, we took a boat ride out to see Ft. Sumter. The tour was very interesting and visiting
the fort took us back in time. Because
it was Jack’s birthday (and because it was the 154th anniversary of
the first shots of the Civil War), the tour group was treated to a display of
how muskets were loaded and fired while in battle. After Ft. Sumter, we took a water taxi across
Charleston Harbor to Patriots Point where we toured the aircraft carrier USS
Yorktown, the destroyer USS Laffey, the submarine USS Clamagore, plus a mock
village from Viet Nam. The Yorktown was featured in the movie Tora, Tora, Tora
plus it recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts.
We walked through the submarine and it was very narrow and claustrophobic! It was a very interesting and educational
day.
