August 18-20, 2015 - Mackinaw City

After checking the weather, we left DeTour around 8:30 on Tuesday.  We had to say goodbye to Field Trip – they were heading to St. Ignace while we were heading to Mackinaw CityPalmetto Paradise followed them, but they will rejoin us in a few days.  We stopped at Cheboygan for gas and docked at the Mackinaw City Marina at 12:00.  The day started with a little rain, but by the time we reached Mackinaw City, the sun was out.  It was another nice day with calm waters.  Patriot showed up late in the afternoon.   Mackinaw City is a pretty lively tourist town and we spent a lot of time walking the streets.  Plus I had the best hamburger since entering Canada that night! We spent most of Wednesday working around the boat and doing laundry.  We had some more rain during the day.  We celebrated Jack and Jane’s 48th anniversary with a champagne toast on Patriot and then all went out to dinner.  We were able to find a shop and had a nice sign made commemorating their anniversary. We woke up Thursday to more rain and temperatures in the 60s.  In the afternoon we took a tour of the USCGC Mackinaw which is a 290 foot vessel built as an icebreaker for the Great Lakes.  The icebreaker is used to keep shipping lanes clear for commercial vessels in the Great Lakes area when the lakes are still iced over.  The one we toured was decommissioned in 2006 and was replaced by a new vessel.
