May 1-3, 2015 - Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City is famous for its rose buddies.  In the past, it was a tradition to give roses to all the ladies on boats arriving at the dock.  When the man who started the tradition died, the rose bushes in his yard were re-planted by the welcome sign. The rose buddy tradition has died, but at times roses are delivered to the dock.  We had a rose on the bow of our boat the first weekend we were here.  Elizabeth City is also home of the largest Coast Guard base. Our last few days here have been fairly non-eventful. Friday was rainy and cold.  We did a little grocery shopping and then fixed dinner for June, Danny, Jan and Bud on the boat.  Saturday we woke up to sunshine (finally). Our time was up at the marina, so we moved back to the city dock.  On Saturday, there was a farmers market in the park next to the boat so the area was full of people.  We walked around the Albemarle Museum which was quite interesting.  We met several other Loopers who were passing through.  Dinner Saturday night was at June and Danny's house with Jan and Bud preparing the meal.  Sunday was a beautiful day - our best day yet.  We made our final grocery store run and then met the "group" for another fun meal together.  I took advantage of the nice weather and took a walk around downtown Elizabeth City.  The downtown consists mainly of store front attorneys offices, the federal and county courthouses, and a few novelty shops.  There are a few restaurants but they were closed on Sunday.  Late in the afternoon, we met Vicki and Tom (Grand Baron) and spent the evening on the back deck having drinks and pizza.  We will meet them again along the way.
