May 4-5, 2015 - Dismal Swamp

After 11 days, we left Elizabeth City at 9:00 with Danny, June, Jan and Buddy along for the ride to the Dismal Swamp Visitor Center.  The Dismal Swamp is a very beautiful, narrow waterway.  It is the oldest operating artificial waterway in the United States.  Another fun historic fact is that George Washington and a group of adventurers owned about 50,000 acres in the Dismal Swamp that they were logging. We had great weather and beautiful scenery all the way up.  We saw a lot of turtles sunning themselves on logs, but saw no other wildlife.  Jan said she saw a snake.  We went through our first official lock of the Loop.  We arrived at the Visitor Center at 11:30.  After a walk through the welcome center, we feasted on hot dogs on the back deck.  We said goodbye to everyone around 4:00.  We had a great time with them during our 11 day stay in Elizabeth City.  We can't thank Danny and June enough for their hospitality, tour guide services AND the use of their car for the week.  We took many trips down memory lane and spent a lot of time just laughing.  The next morning we left around 5:30 to make the next lock at the 8:30 opening.  We still didn't get through the lock until after 9:30 but had another beautiful day in the Swamp.  Other than snapping our radio antennae on a low hanging branch, we had no other incidents on our way to Norfolk.  We settled into our slip at Top Rack Marina in Norfolk early afternoon.
