May 18-21, 2015 - Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis

After 3 days of touring museums, settling Jamestown colony, and fighting for our independence, we looked forward to a few quiet days on the water as we made a three day trip to Annapolis.  As we were leaving Hampton Monday morning, we ran into some people on the dock that we had met before – Dan and Angie (Sea Horse) (we met them at the rendezvous) and Dan and Jacque (Horizon Chaser) from our time at Vero Beach.  We will probably run into them again along the way.  The waters in Chesapeake Bay were very calm Monday and our ride was very pleasant.  The Chesapeake is a large body of water, so there wasn't much to see along the way.  We anchored at Ashleys Cove around 2:30.  There were rain showers around us, but we lucked out and didn’t get wet.  We left Ashleys Cove Tuesday morning around 8:20 and had another nice smooth and sunny day on the Chesapeake.  We anchored about 1:00 at St. Mary's City.  St. Mary's City is another small historic town and also is the home of St. Mary's College, a small liberal arts (and sailing) college.  We took the dinghy out for a pretty ride around the area and then walked around the campus.  Later that afternoon we met Garry and Jacque Nelson (who were also anchored close to us) and they came aboard for happy hour and to share their knowledge of Canada and Michigan.  We left  St. Mary’s Wednesday at 7:00 and were immediately met with winds and rough seas.  After about 2-1/2 hours we were worn out and ducked into a cove (very shallow) for a while.  We waited for about an hour and a half, fixed our lunch, took supplies up to the bridge, and took off again for the afternoon.   The waters eventually calmed a little and we were able to make it to Herrington Harbor South in North Beach, Maryland around 5:00 for the night.  We left Herrington Harbor South around 8:30 Thursday and traveled 2-1/2 hours to Annapolis Landing Marina.  It was a little rough at first but the waters eventually calmed down and it started raining.  After docking, we found a good pizza place for lunch, got our rental car for the week, and settled in to stay warm and dry.
