March 2-3, 2015 - Boca Chita Key

Boca Chita Key is about 18 miles south of Miami.  It was originally owned by Mark Honeywell of Honeywell, Inc.  He built quite a few stone structures around the key (including the lighthouse).  Boca Chita Key is now part of the Biscayne National Park.  There is a small harbor with picnic tables, a shelter, a trail through an uninhabited part of the key, a few stone structures still remaining, and a lighthouse.  We were able to go to the top of the lighthouse to take in the surrounding area.  Biscayne Bay is on one side and the Atlantic on the other.  The place was beautiful and we immediately decided to spend another day here.  We ate our dinner on the picnic tables and watched another beautiful sunset.  Tuesday we took a walk around the key and were met with many mosquitos.  Later we took the dinghy down and toured some of the surrounding smaller keys.  Jack and Ross tried their hand at fishing (again).  We were entertained Tuesday afternoon when several Park service boats and a Border Patrol boat showed up to do some exercises in the wooded area.  They quickly announced on a loudspeaker that this was an exercise.  There was a lot of shouting and blank guns going off.  The weather was great and it was a very relaxing two days.  We had another dinner on the picnic table and watched another sunset before getting ready to leave the next morning.
